Heavy Construction Project Management Director: California
   

Job Description:

Our client is an established, privately held, regional underground heavy construction company (sewer, water, storm drain, dry utilities, pump stations, treatment plants and concrete structures) that has been in business for 40+ years. The company has experienced rapid growth in recent years and is financially strong. In order to strengthen project management capabilities and to enhance management depth, The Director of Project Management, with the help of a small staff, will proactively direct and support the collective project management effort. This will include, but not be limited to, the business development, bidding, estimating and job review, contractual, pre-planning, scheduling, job costing and client relations’ activities.

The Director of Project Management will be a “hands on” leader and manager with strong analytical, communication and collaborative skills. In addition, the successful candidate must have held a senior project management role in a construction company, preferably heavy underground, with annual revenue of at least $50 million

Responsibilities

Managing the Project Management Department. This is comprised of project managers (6), project engineers (6), a project administrator and a contract and estimating engineer. The successful candidate will manage to mutually agreed upon goals and objectives and will be responsible for all professional development and training within the department.

Assisting with Strategic Imperatives. The successful candidate will work with the CEO, COO/CFO and other members of the management team on achieving and refining the company’s strategic imperatives and will participate, as necessary, in follow on actions.

Background

  • B.S. or B.A. degree. Construction Management or Civil Engineering preferred. 5 to 10 years of project management experience, preferably with a $50 million + underground company
  • Directing and first-hand experience in all aspects of managing projects --- from pre-job to final payment, including pre-planning, scheduling, field coordination, contract administration, client relationships and change order recognition, pricing and negotiating.
  • Directing and first-hand experience in all aspects of the bidding process --- from prospecting new clients to signing the contract, including acquiring plans and specs, soliciting subs, understanding project specifications, quantity takeoffs, material knowledge, production knowledge, risk analysis and pricing strategies.
  • First-hand experience with construction software programs.
  • Proven management and “team building“ skills.
