Moody Nolan & HOK Chicago Partner For Columbus Hotel Project

"Moody Nolan Inc. will join HOK Chicago to design the 500-room, $160 million convention hotel planned for downtown Columbus, Ohio.

A selection panel created by the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority chose the Columbus firm as architect of record after interviews on June 17 with the other finalists, Karlsberger Cos. and 360 Architecture Ohio Inc. HOK Chicago emerged as the design architect for the project after interviews on June 10."

Whiting Turner Wins Parris Island Barracks Project

Harrah's To Break Ground On Cherokee Casino Expansion

"Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel in Cherokee, N.C., will break ground July 10 on a hotel tower to accommodate guests to the Smoky Mountains gambling destination.

The tower is stage one of a $650 million expansion of the casino and hotel and will have more than 500 rooms. A 3,000-seat event center also is planned as well as a spa, new restaurants and retail facilities during the three-year project."

Girard Medical Center Groundbreaking

Nashville To Get Big Downtown Hotel

"Today, the city's Metro Development and Housing Agency's board chose Colorado-based Phelps Development and Atlanta-based Portman Holdings to develop a $300 million, 1,000-room, 40-story hotel to complement the planned $595 million, 1.2-million-square-foot downtown convention center.

The city doesn't have the money to pay for either project but local officials anticipate a private financing plan will evolve before any ground-breaking date is set.

Ten national developers submitted bids for the hotel project, according to Metro Finance Director Rich Riebeling.

The hotel would be built on a 2.4-acre site owned by Tower Investments, another member of the Phelps-Portman development team. The hotel site is south of the Country Music Hall of Fame and next to the convention center site."

New Downey Medical Center Complete

"Construction has been completed on a new 352-bed hospital called Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center, built by McCarthy Building Cos., that replaces a hospital that does not meet seismic standards. Located on the northwest corner of Imperial Highway and Bellflower Boulevard, the new 650,000-square-foot facility replaces the existing Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, which does not comply with the stringent seismic requirements of California Senate Bill 1953 for healthcare facilities. Planning is currently in progress to convert the hospital for outpatient uses."

Skanska USA Building will act as the Owner’s Project Manager providing Project Management Services. Suffolk Completes Fenway Healthcare Facility

"Suffolk Healthcare announced that it has completed the fit-out of Fenway Health’s new home at 1340 Boylston Street in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. The 100,000 square-foot facility includes examination rooms, treatment facilities, therapy rooms, a street-level retail pharmacy, state-of-the-art auditorium and conference center, and office space.

Suffolk Healthcare closely coordinated efforts with the Suffolk-led project team that was managing construction of the 1330 Boylston Street base building. The two Suffolk project teams were able to successfully plan a seamless transition from core and shell to interior fit-out, resulting in a successful delivery of the new healthcare space."

Pizzigalli Wins Vermont Health Care Project

"Pizzagalli Construction Company of South Burlington started work this week on a new Radiation Oncology facility on the Medical Center Campus at Fletcher Allen Health Care. The $8 million project, designed by Cannon Design, will include approximately 23,000 square feet of new construction. The total cost of the project, including the structure and new medical equipment, is $19.3 million. It will be built into the hillside on the east side of the Ambulatory Care Center."

Charlotte Firm To Build Lansing City Market

Lansing Entertainment & Public Facilities Authority officials recently selected the company based on a bid that came in around $1.6 million.

Clark Construction Wins Michigan Speedway Project

"Michigan International Speedway officials have chosen Lansing-based Clark Construction as general contractor for its $17 million suite and media center project, strengthening its commitment to use Michigan-based businesses to stimulate the local economy.

The speedway recently announced Phase One of a multi-phase plan to redesign the track infield, starting with demolition and construction of the current terrace suites and media center. The project will begin following the track’s August NASCAR weekend and will be ready for the 2010 season at the track.

Walton Construction Wins Fort Riley Contract

"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has selected a joint-venture team including Walton Construction Co. LLC of Kansas City and Balfour Beatty Construction of Dallas to provide preconstruction services for a new $334 million hospital to replace the 50-year-old Irwin Army Community Hospital at Fort Riley, Kan.

The amount each firm is expected to receive from the contract was not disclosed.

The project includes a 263,000-square-foot hospital, a 289,000-square-foot clinic, a central energy plant, an ambulance garage and supporting facilities. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall and be completed by the spring of 2012."

Vacant Gentilly Shopping Center Purchased

"A development team based in Kenner has purchased the gutted shopping center in Gentilly that used to house Kirschman's furniture store.

Few details were available Thursday about the new owner's plans for the property at 4800 Chef Menteur Highway. Esther Cheung, a member of the investment group that bought the shopping mall, declined to comment while a construction loan on the project was still pending.

Chris Abadie, a sales and leasing executive with Stirling Properties who represented the sellers in the transaction, said he believes the new owners plan to restore the property as a retail center. "

McCarthy Breaks Ground At UCLA Medical Center

Inc. broke ground on a project at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center that will be delivered under a guaranteed maximum price agreement, the first such contract for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works that the Newport Beach, CA-based contractor is aware of. The $32 million project encompasses replacement and expansion of the hospital’s emergency services and acute care units with construction of a single-story, 41,000-square-foot addition to the existing facility.
“We are increasingly seeing public entities explore alternative delivery methods, since they help to control costs while producing a higher quality project,” says Steven Mynsberge, executive vice president and healthcare business unit leader for McCarthy. “Under our contract, we’re helping keep the project on-budget by working with the county to keep costs low and ensuring that we won’t go over a set amount.”

As part of the GMP process, McCarthy provided the bids for each subcontractor so the county could verify that the company received competitive pricing, since subcontractor work makes up for approximately 80% of the total contract value."

"Atlantic Realty Partners has completed its $4-million the Esplanade at Arlington Heights retail center at 2920 W. Euclid Ave. McShane Construction Co. built the 19,000-square-foot development, which is currently about 50% leased. Developers say the project fills a retail void in the area, which has numerous business drivers including the neighboring Arlington Park racetrack, recently renovated Sheraton Chicago Northwest Hotel, and new Coco Key Water Park.
"It was a great site on a high-traffic corner timed to coincide with the redevelopment of the hotel and opening of the water park," Richard Aaronson, president of Atlantic, tells GlobeSt.com. "We were able to take advantage of a stop-light corner and the advent of the new developments in the area. The contemporary design puts an emphasis on the fact that we're bringing new product to the market."

Atlantic has owned the four-acre property since 2007. Originally considered for development of multifamily apartments, the site was eventually determined through collaboration with the village to be best-purposed for retail. HKM Architects + Planners Inc. designed the development, which McShane constructed from a combination of brick veneer, storefront glass and aluminum composite panels."

Burns & McDonnell Wins Wichita Water Contract

"Burns & McDonnell is part of a joint venture team that won a $74 million contract from the city of Wichita to help ensure an adequate water supply for the city.

Kansas City-based Burns & McDonnell, the largest engineering firm in Missouri, will be joined on the project by partners Alberici Constructors of St. Louis and CAS Construction of Topeka.

The partners will design and build water intake, treatment and well-field facilities for the second phase of the Wichita Aquifer Storage and Recovery Program."

"The company that owns the old Mervyns building at the Bayshore Mall is looking to sell the property, but the move is expected to have no impact on Kohl's plans to open a department store at the location.
”They are coming and they're committed to coming, and they're excited about being here,” Bayshore Mall Property Manager Sue Swanson said Monday.
Retail property developer Macerich purchased a host of Mervyns Department Store properties in December 2007 and January 2008, after the giant retail chain went bankrupt. Included in that purchase was the Mervyns property at the Bayshore Mall."

"Crosland LLC has won an intense national competition that positions it to lead an estimated $170 million to $200 million mixed-use redevelopment in Charlottesville, Va.

Martha Jefferson Hospital's board of trustees has entered an exclusive negotiating agreement with the Charlotte real estate company to shape the future of its 14-acre downtown campus.

The hospital, which is moving in 2012 to a new facility on 88 acres, would be replaced under Crosland's development concept by a master-planned community comprising neighborhood compatible residences, shops and offices."

URS Corporation provided construction management services for the project as part of an ongoing contract with the Las Vegas Clark County Library District (LVCCLD) for construction management for two new libraries and the modernization of 10 existing libraries. URS services included project and construction management, cost estimating, schedule analysis, quality assurance review, value engineering, and construction reviews. Clark Construction Building Rockville Science Center

" Clark Construction Group, LLC, has been selected to lead construction of a 140,700 square-foot Science Center at Montgomery College's Rockville Campus. The $51 million Rockville Science Center will be integrated with the college's existing Science East building.
The Center will contain offices, classrooms, and laboratory space for biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering programs. Clark also will manage the construction of a greenhouse and a rooftop observatory. The scope of work also includes renovating and expanding the campus' stormwater management facility. The project team will resize the outfall and expand the existing facility.

Supported by a cast-in-pace skeleton, the building will feature a structural steel roof and a curtain wall and metal panel façade.

The Science Center is designed to achieve LEED® Gold certification. Planned green design elements include photovoltaic solar panels and a green roof. "

Major Modernization Planned For Portland Building

A new wave of federal stimulus dollars will mean a complete overhaul for a federally owned property in downtown Portland.
In what contractors are calling one of the region’s costliest projects funded through the General Services Administration, the 18-floor Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building will undergo $134 million in modernization work, funded through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. The GSA acts as the property manager for the federal government.
It’s one of three stimulus-funded projects – at a total of nearly $150 million – that will modernize Oregon buildings occupied by the federal government. The other buildings are the BPA Building in Portland and the David J. Wheeler Federal Building in Baker.

DC Chooses Team For 6th St. Development Project

"Mayor Adrian Fenty announced Monday the selection of E Street Development LLC from the truck bay of Engine Co. No. 13 on Sixth Street SW. That property and another around the corner on Fourth Street SW were the subject of a solicitation from Deputy Mayor Neil Albert in June 2008. Fenty said the selection showed that the District, despite the economy, was still moving ahead “at a thousand miles an hour.” He said he expected the team to break ground next year on a new fire station, part of the first phase of the project.

E Street’s team is made up of Potomac Investment Properties Inc., CityPartners LLC, Adams Investment Group, D.C. Strategy Group LLC and Paramount Development LLC. The developers will start with a 10-story building on Fourth Street with the fire station and community space on the first two floors, about 3,000 square-feet of which to be used by KidPower Inc., a youth development group based in Gallery Place. Above would be a Class A, environmentally sensitive office building.

In a second phase, the developers plan to replace the existing fire station on Sixth Street with an 11-story, 307,000-square-foot Class A office building with ground-floor retail that will include training and retail space for nonprofit D.C. Central Kitchen and two levels of below-grade parking. They beat out teams led by JLH Partners and Trammell Crow."

Lennar Purchases 230 Cary Home Sites

"National home builder Lennar Corp. has made an aggressive land grab in west Cary, buying 230 home sites in the new Stonewater community at a time when many builders are slashing home prices and trying to purge excess land inventory.

Lennar paid almost $15.2 million, or $65,917 per lot, so the company could start its second phase of construction at Stonewater.

AECOM Wins Major Florida Highway Project

AECOM Technology Corporation, a leading provider of professional technical and management support services for government and commercial clients around the world, announced today that it has been awarded a $70-million, five-year contract by Dragados USA for design and construction services to upgrade Florida's I-595 highway.

The $1.25-billion I-595 project is being financed through a public-private partnership (P3) between the Florida Department of Transportation and I-595 Express, a consortium led by ACS Infrastructure Development. Dragados USA, the design-build contractor, will lead the construction effort with AECOM as its design partner.

As the prime consultant on the project, AECOM will provide roadway design, structures, drainage design, utility design, lighting, signals, intelligent-transportation systems for civil works, landscaping, environmental permitting, surveys and geotechnical services. Construction is expected to begin during spring 2009.

Graycor To Build Chattanooga Volkswagen Plant

"Volkswagen on Monday gave Chicago-based Graycor Construction Co. a $63 million contract to build the automaker’s Chattanooga plant.



Graycor will be responsible for the assembly and body shops, technical center and “social area” at the $1 billion facility in the Enterprise South Industrial Park north of downtown, and will begin construction late this month, Volkswagen Group of America said.

But even though the contract goes to an out of state firm, more than 60 percent of the work will be done by local subcontractors, Volkswagen said, including 11 percent to minority and woman-owned companies."

Skanska Completes Mission Texas High School

The new school opened to students on Jan. 19 and was built to accommodate the tremendous population growth in the La Joya School District.

The La Joya High School is the first four-year secondary education facility built in the district since 1987. The 340,000-square-foot high school is comprised of four buildings that were completed as part of the 2004 Bond Program."

Mixed Use Project Planned For Orlando

Developer Craig Ustler is forging ahead despite the credit crunch, recession and commercial market slowdown putting the brakes on large construction projects.

His firm, Ustler Development Inc., is planning a $10.1 million, 30,000-square-foot, mixed-use development at 800 N. Orange Ave., catty-corner to its 801 N. Orange Ave. project completed in 2006 in downtown Orlando.

Preliminary plans for the new five-story building include 1,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial or gallery space, 15,000 square feet of office space and residential condos.
